Why Do We Need HDMI?

HDMI Why Do We Need HDMI?

HDMI

Anyone who has bought a TV, game console, or media player within the last few years has heard of HDMI, but many people are unclear on exactly what it is. While the name “HDMI”, which is short for High Definition Multimedia Interface, probably makes it sound overly complicated, it’s really very simple when you get right down to it. By the end of this article, you should have a good understanding of what HDMI is and why you need it.

Let’s start with the basics.

HDMI

HDMI is the standard interface for the new high definition televisions and home theater systems coming out today. A single HDMI cable is made up of a total of 19 separate wires combined into one. It has a data transfer rate of 5 Gbps, which is a huge increase from previous types of cables. The quality of the cable and this high data transfer rate allow HDMI cables to transfer a digital signal instead of an analog one.

This is important because analog signals seriously degrade sound and video quality. If you’re using a DVD player or game console with an analog cable, then you are losing a significant amount of quality because of this. The quality is there in the DVDs or games, which are digital, but it’s severely degraded just by going through an analog cable. This is why manufacturers are moving to the HDMI standard in all new media players and game consoles; it’s the only way to ensure that the sound and picture quality they’re putting into their products actually makes it to the televisions of the people who buy them.

So, knowing that HDMI is so important, how exactly do you get it?

It’s not as difficult as you might think. It used to be that you could only get HDMI on expensive high-end televisions, but since it’s becoming the new standard, even cheap, low-end LCD TVs typically have at least one HDMI port these days. More expensive televisions will, of course, have more ports. If you already have a TV with only one HDMI port, and you need more, there are HDMI switchers available that will allow you to switch between three or more different HDMI signals.

Do You Want To Work As a Video Game Tester?

Video Game Tester 300x225 Do You Want To Work As a Video Game Tester?Imagine you have a job that you look forward each day. Imagine you do not have to leave your house to get to work. By becoming a video game tester, you can do exactly like that. It sounds like a dream job, but there are also some things that you need to keep in mind.

First, the job can become tiresome. Many companies will ask you to go through the whole game within a week. Going through the whole game means testing every single character, testing every weapon, and going through the entire map before reporting feedback on any glitches or bugs found. The programmer’s error in a line of script now becomes your duty to discover and report.

As a result of tight deadlines, this will surely lead you to long hours of testing a video game. But, if you love, then this is the perfect job for you.

Apple iPod touch (Gen 4)

apple ipod touch Apple iPod touch (Gen 4)BUILD & DESIGN

The new iPod touch is beautifully designed, as all Apple products are, with sleek lines and modern details. Unlike the iPhone 4, it isn’t at all boxy. It is remarkably thin and light, with strongly tapered edges. If you use the device “naked” you may not even remember it’s in your pocket — it really is that small.

With smartphones, they sometimes seem quite light… and then you notice that the battery is still in the box, so you are immediately disappointed with a light phone that almost instantly becomes a heavy “brick” in your pocket.. That isn’t the case here; the iPod touch is sealed so it comes fully assembled with the battery inside and it weighs just a few ounces.

The build quality is excellent, as you would expect from Apple. There is no creaking, bending, or flexing of any kind.

Display
The new Retina display on the iPod touch is absolutely gorgeous. I haven’t had the opportunity to see it side-by-side with a new iPhone 4 yet, so it’s hard to make direct comparisons. I can say that it is vastly superior to my old iPod touch. It is extremely sharp and clear, and much more readable outside in bright sunlight.

My photos look better than ever before, and video does too — amazingly sharp and clear. If you have an older iPod touch, you’ll see a huge difference in the display — the new Retina technology represents a great improvement.

This improvement isn’t really all that surprising, considering the screen resolution has gone from 320×480 to 640×960, but the display size hasn’t changed – it’s still 3.5 inches.

Keyboard
The iPod touch doesn’t have a physical keyboard, instead relying on a virtual keyboard for text entry.

It works well, but of course I have long experience with the old iPod touch so there’s nothing new for me here. I can say that typing is easier with the new model because it is fast enough to make the built-in word completion utility a pleasure to use instead of a pain.

It also lets you double tap on the shift key to enable Caps Lock, which I use all time time and am thankful to have. It’s a little thing, but it isn’t available on the original iPod Touch.

BlackBerry Bold 9650

BlackBerry Bold 9650 BlackBerry Bold 9650RIM has hit the mark with the new BlackBerry Bold 9650. With an optical trackpad, Wi-Fi, international roaming capabilities, BlackBerry OS 5.0, 512 MB of on-board memory and plenty of processing horsepower this smartphone is the new standard bearer for CDMA-based BlackBerrys.

Although badged as a Bold, the styling dimensions and feel of the device point more to a revamped BlackBerry Tour than a CDMA-based version of Bold 9700, which is offered by the GSM-based carriers AT&T and T-Mobile.

The Bold 9650 currently retails through Sprint for $200 and Verizon Wireless for $150.

BUILD & DESIGN

The Bold 9650 is nearly identical to the Tour — the only discernible design update is the addition of the optical trackpad.

This model is heavier and bulkier than the Bold 9700 though still manageable in a pocket or purse.

Screen
RIM has been doing a great job in the display department as of late. The 2.4-inch 480×360 screen is crisp, bright, and manages browsing sessions well.

Like all BlackBerrys, the display will adjust to ambient light.

Keyboard
The Bold 9650 sports the better of the two keyboards RIM currently produces. It is accurate, responsive and quick.

Its rubbery keys are row-separated by a depressed chrome bezel.
